Ronchedone
Ronchedone is a red wine we discovered at Latium restaurant in London. We fell in love with it the first time we tried it. Now that we are in Trento, just 20 miles from the northern tip of Garda lake, it is only an additional pleasant drive along the Eastern side of Garda to reach the producer Ca' dei Frati nearby the other end of the Lake. Being in the production area for Lugana, they specialise on white wines (excellent their 'Brolettino'), but they also manage to turn out this marvel of a red.
It suprises for its power, considering it is made in good proportion out of Marzemino - which on its own produces delicate wines in the area south of Trento. This strength is explained by the other main partner grape, Sangiovese, and by a maximum 10% of Cabernet. The nose is complex (red fruits, berries and some spice), and it is neat and punchy on the palate. It is best drunk after a few years in the bottle (up to seven years will be fine), but we could not resist opening a bottle right after our visit to the vineyards...
We took a walk around. Here is Man (a tall man) in adoration of the big steel container which he has mistaken for a totem:
We nose around examining some techical implements:
We also notice they are expanding. There is a baby vineyard next to the old one:
The young Ronchedone is of course much more fruity, less complex than one that has had a proper time to age. We will be saving the other bottles, bought at €11.50 each, for drinking in quite some time. Ca' dei Frati is a nice little producer and no doubt we will be visiting them again before long!

Hello. Stumbled on your blog while googling "food, trento, blog". We're visiting Trento soon. Any recommendations for accomodation?
Hi mingapore, you are bound to have a very good time in Trento!
As for accommodation, since we generally stay for long periods we do rent a small flat, so have not tried many hotels. But if you want to splash out, the Grand Hotel Boscolo in piazza Dante (opposite the station) ir very good, and you can find plenty of good deals online, either from their own web page, if we recall well, or sites such as venere.com. Another one we are told is very reasonable, asnd should be less expensive, is Albermonace, but we have never been tehre ourselves. good reports from Hotel L'Aquila, in the main square, on the pricey side, but recently completely refurbished (Womam tried it when it was still "just" a three star), eacdh room has either a sauna or a turkish bath, and apparently also a complimentary laptop with internet connection. Have fun!
